๐Ÿ“‹ Daily Health Checklist

  • โ˜Observe behavior: Active, alert birds with normal posture
  • โ˜Check droppings: Should be firm, dark with white cap
  • โ˜Inspect feathers: Clean, smooth, no bare patches
  • โ˜Check eyes and nostrils: Clear, bright, no discharge
  • โ˜Monitor feed/water intake: Sudden drops indicate illness
  • โ˜Check egg production: Sudden drop may signal disease

๐Ÿ“‹ Weekly Health Inspection Protocol

Perform this detailed inspection once per week. Take 10โ€“15 minutes to examine your entire flock:

  1. Observe from a distance (2 minutes): Before approaching, watch the flock for 2 minutes. Note any birds sitting apart, fluffed up, or showing abnormal posture. Active, alert birds moving and eating normally = good sign.
  2. Check droppings (2 minutes): Examine droppings on the floor or tray. Normal = firm, dark green/brown with a white urate cap. Abnormal = runny, bloody, bright green, or all-white (indicates kidney problems).
  3. Individual handling (5โ€“8 minutes): Gently catch and examine 5โ€“10 random birds. Check: eyes (bright, clear), nostrils (no discharge), beak (no deformities), feathers (smooth, no bare patches), keel bone (firm, not prominent), vent (clean, not swollen), feet (no bumblefoot or scaly leg mites).
  4. Listen (1 minute): In a quiet environment, listen for respiratory sounds. Sneezing, wheezing, rattling, or gasping = disease indicator.
  5. Record (1 minute): Note any concerns in your log. Track body condition, egg production numbers, and any treatments given.

๐Ÿ“Š Body Condition Scoring

Feel the keel bone (breastbone) on each bird to assess body condition:

ScoreFeelConditionAction
1 โ€” EmaciatedKeel bone very prominent, sharp edges, no fatUnderweight, possibly illIsolate, increase feed, check for parasites/disease
2 โ€” ThinKeel bone easily felt, minimal muscle coveringSlightly underweightIncrease protein feed, add supplements
3 โ€” IdealKeel bone felt with gentle pressure, well-muscledPerfect conditionMaintain current management
4 โ€” OverweightKeel bone hard to feel, excess fat depositsOverfed, under-exercisedReduce treats, increase space/exercise
