☀️ Summer Management (June–August)

🔥 Heat Is the #1 Summer Threat

Quail suffer heat stress above 85°F (30°C). Mortality can spike rapidly above 95°F. Proactive management saves lives.

  • Shade: Ensure all outdoor areas have shade structures. Add shade cloth to windows.
  • Ventilation: Increase air flow with fans. Open additional vents. Never seal a quail house in summer.
  • Water: Add ice cubes to waterers. Change water 2–3× daily to keep it cool. Add electrolytes during heat waves.
  • Feeding: Feed during cooler morning/evening hours. Reduce feed slightly in extreme heat.
  • Lighting: Reduce to 14 hours to decrease metabolic heat production.
  • Misting: Fine mist spray in extreme heat (>95°F). Wet the floor or use evaporative cooling.
  • Monitoring: Check birds every 2–3 hours during peak heat. Remove any birds showing signs of heat stroke immediately.

❄️ Winter Management (December–February)

  • Draft protection: Seal drafts but maintain ventilation. Ammonia buildup is worse than cold.
  • Deep litter: Add extra bedding (6–8 inches) for insulation. Stir regularly.
  • Lighting: Maintain 14–16 hours. Short winter days reduce production without supplementation.
  • Water: Prevent freezing. Use heated waterers or add a floating object to ice. Check 2–3× daily.
  • Feed: Increase feed slightly in cold weather. Birds need more energy to maintain body temperature.
  • Perches: Provide low perches so birds can roost above cold floors.
  • Warm water: Offer lukewarm water in the morning to stimulate drinking.

🌱 Spring (March–May)

  • Peak breeding season — increase breeding pairs
  • Natural light increases boost production
  • Watch for increased aggression during mating
  • Begin new hatchling batches for summer production
  • Deep clean housing before spring breeding

🍂 Fall (September–November)

  • Molting season — expect production drops
  • Increase protein to 24% to support feather regrowth
  • Cull non-productive birds before winter

🌡️ Extreme Heat Protocol (95°F+)

  1. Move birds indoors or to shaded area immediately
  2. Add ice to waterers — replace every 2–3 hours
  3. Mist birds with fine spray in afternoon (2–5 PM)
  4. Reduce feed by 20% — offer only in early morning and evening
  5. Increase ventilation to maximum — open all windows and doors
  6. Add electrolytes to water (commercial product or 1 tsp baking soda + 1 tsp salt per gallon)
  7. Monitor every 1–2 hours — remove any bird showing heat stroke signs immediately
  8. Expect production drop of 20–40% — this is normal and recovers when temps normalize

❄️ Extreme Cold Protocol (Below 20°F)

  1. Increase feed by 15–20% — birds need more energy to stay warm
  2. Add extra bedding — 6–8 inches of dry pine shavings or straw
  3. Check water every 2–3 hours — use heated waterers or add a floating ball to prevent ice formation
  4. Block drafts but maintain ventilation — seal gaps but keep air vents open
  5. Add roosting perches — birds can roost off the cold floor
  6. Offer warm water in the morning to stimulate drinking
  7. Keep light at 16 hours — short winter days reduce production without supplementation
