Complete guide to successfully incubating and hatching quail eggs.

Day 0

Set Eggs

Place eggs in incubator at 99.5°F and 50–55% humidity.

Day 3–5

First Candling

You should see a small dark spot with blood vessels radiating outward.

Day 14–15

Stop Turning / Lock-Down

Stop turning eggs. Increase humidity to 65–75%. Do not open incubator.

Day 17–18

Hatching!

Most chicks hatch within a 24–48 hour window. Leave chicks until dry and fluffy.

Day 15–17	Lock-down	STOP turning eggs. Increase humidity to 65–75%. Do NOT open incubator.	Opening incubator can cause membranes to stick to chicks, preventing hatching.
Day 17–18	Hatching	Chicks pip and hatch within 24–48 hour window. Leave in incubator until dry and fluffy.	If pipped but not hatching after 24hrs, humidity may be too low. Do NOT help them out.

Opening the incubator too often — Each opening drops temperature and humidity, disrupting development. Only open for candling (quickly) and adding water.
Incorrect egg positioning — Pointed end DOWN for manual turning. Horizontal for auto-turners. Wrong position = chick can't position for hatching.
Not calibrating thermometer — Even 1°F off can reduce hatch rates by 10–15%. Use a calibrated digital thermometer as backup.
Stopping turning too early or late — Stop at day 14–15 for Japanese quail. Too early = poor development. Too late = chick can't position.
Wrong humidity during lock-down — Must increase to 65–75% in final days. Too low = sticky membranes. Too high = drowned chicks.
Helping chicks out of shell — Never pull a chick from its shell. It absorbs the yolk sac in the hours before hatching. Premature help = death.
Using old eggs — Fertility drops dramatically after 7 days of storage. Set only fresh eggs for best results.
Inconsistent turning schedule — If auto-turner, ensure it works. If manual, turn 3–5 times daily at equal intervals. Missing turns = poor embryo development.
Ignoring weight loss during incubation — Eggs should lose 10–12% of weight by lockdown. Weigh sample eggs on day 0 and day 14 to verify.
Poor ventilation — Developing embryos need oxygen. Ensure vents are open (even during lock-down, don't block ventilation).
