📊 Quail Manure Composition

Quail manure is an excellent organic fertilizer, richer in phosphorus than chicken manure. It can be sold for $5–10 per bag or used on your own garden to grow feed crops.
🌾 Composting Methods
Produces finished compost in 4–8 weeks:
- Carbon:Nitrogen ratio: Mix manure with carbon sources (straw, wood shavings, dried leaves) at 2:1 ratio
- Pile size: Minimum 3ft × 3ft × 3ft to generate heat
- Temperature: Should reach 130–150°F (55–65°C) — kills pathogens and weed seeds
- Turning: Turn every 3–5 days to maintain aeration
- Moisture: Keep like a wrung-out sponge — damp but not dripping
Simple pile method, takes 6–12 months:
- Layer manure and carbon materials in a pile
- Leave undisturbed — nature does the work
- Less effective at killing pathogens
- Good for small operations with patience
Using red wiggler worms to process manure into premium castings:
- Bedding: Shredded cardboard, newspaper, or coconut coir
- Add manure sparingly — don't overwhelm the worms
- Worm castings sell for $10–20 per bag (premium fertilizer)
- Worms also produce high-protein worm biomass (can feed back to quail!)
🏠 Deep Litter System
The deep litter method uses composting directly in the poultry house:
- Start with 4–6 inches of dry carbon material (pine shavings, straw)
- Add fresh bedding on top as needed (2–3 inches per week)
- Turn/stir the litter weekly to aerate and prevent compaction
- The bottom layers compost in place, generating mild heat in winter
- Full cleanout 1–2 times per year
- Finished litter is excellent garden compost
Improperly managed litter produces ammonia, which damages respiratory systems. Keep litter dry, well-aerated, and maintain levels below 25 ppm. If you can smell ammonia, it's already too high.
🌍 Environmental Best Practices
- Water runoff: Prevent manure-contaminated water from entering streams or wells
- Stockpiling: Store manure under cover, away from water sources
- Application rates: Don't over-apply to fields — soil tests guide proper rates
- Winter spreading: Avoid spreading on frozen ground (runoff risk)
- Record keeping: Track manure production and disposal methods

Never apply raw manure to food crops. Raw manure can contain pathogens (Salmonella, E. coli) and burn plants with excess nitrogen. Always compost for at least 3 months (hot composting) or 6 months (cold composting) before use on edible crops.
